Leech therapy, known as “Hirudotherapy,” is an integral part of Unani medicine with a history that dates back thousands of years. This ancient technique involves using medicinal leeches to treat various health conditions. Leeches secrete saliva containing beneficial bio-active substances, such as hirudin, which have anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties.
Medicinal leeches (Alaq) have been utilized for centuries to treat various ailments. The earliest records of leech therapy trace back to the Greek (Unani) physician Hippocrates, known as the Father of Medicine. Medicinal leeches possess natural healing properties endowed by God, with about 15 species, predominantly Hirudo medicinalis, being used in medical practice.
At our clinic, we adhere to strict ethical sterilization techniques for storing and using leeches. These leeches have specially adapted jaws for firm attachment and secrete natural analgesic, anesthetic, and anticoagulant substances in their saliva. This ensures a painless attachment to the body, allowing for the efficient removal of waste blood. Once they have sucked enough blood, the leeches naturally detach themselves. Research has shown their remarkable effectiveness, even in conditions resistant to other treatments, such as non-healing wounds, plastic surgeries, and other specific indications.
